Situated on Lake Mendota, the community known today as Middleton, Wisconsin, began as a popular ancient campsite for the Algonquin Indians, known as mound builders. Later the Winnebago (Ho-Chunk) Indians became the dominant tribe in the region. French missionaries and fur traders were the first non-natives to explore the area and it existed under the flags of France and Britain before the new United States obtained it under terms of the Ordinance of 1787.

The tale of Middleton is a blend of fascinating stories of many genuine individuals whose lives and spirits fashioned the growth of this community. The fur trader, Michael St. Cyr, warmly greeted his Native American customers. As immigration to the new nation grew, many Germans found their way into Wisconsin to build their new homes, businesses and lives.

With the arrival of the railroad in 1856. Middleton Station, as it was originally named (after a town in Vermont), became the site of the first railway station located between Lake Michigan and the Mississippi River. The railroad station was the hub of what was to become downtown Middleton and still survives today. Soon after, Middleton’s first inn and wagon shop opened for business. Escaping slaves took refuge in the underground railroad that ran through the cellars beneath what is now the Stamm House restaurant. Middleton’s reputation for providing a warm welcome to visitors dates back in history and proudly continues today.
