Only five minutes from Madison's east side and fifteen from the Dane County Airport, Cottage Grove, Wisconsin, claims both the benefits of small town Wisconsin as well as the metropolitan culture and advantages of nearby Madison. Cottage Grove Township was first established when the Northwest Territory survey was completed in 1834. The first two parcels of land in the township were purchased for a young, eastern, millionaire soldier who never lived on it. By 1842 there were 10 households with 42 people settled in the township.
The townspeople took the name "Cottage Grove" when the community established its own government in 1849, the year following Wisconsin statehood. The name commemmorates the fact that the first house to be built in the township was constructed among a grove of oak trees. Farming was the main occupation in the township from then until the mid 1900's. Today less than 1% of the residents in the township give their sole occupation as farming.
Cottage Grove is an easy commute to a wide variety of government and other employment opportunities in Dane County. In 2000 almost two-fifths of its residents held managerial or professional positions with almost one third in sales or administration. With a growing base of home business and farmsteads the township has become a diverse community that continues to thrive.
